3 Dollars a Slice?

Filed under: Canned Heat, Day in the Life, Food — mcgonnigle @ 9:12 pm

I went to lunch today at the “other” pizzeria near work.  I decided to change things up.  They are now charging 3 dollars a slice!  I was in shock.  I didn’t want to say, “no, you keep it”, but I thought about it.  And of course, I’m never going back there again–on principal.  My usual joint has slightly larger slices at 2 for 4 bucks.  They are a half mile apart, the two places.

Do they realize that they will lose more biz than the price increase will garner?  It’s like with taxes (although not for some parties), if you raise them past a certain point, total revenues go down.  My question to the readers is this: What is the most you paid for a slice of pizza?  This place is in Valhalla, NY in Westchester county.

And while I’m on the subject, let’s talk about toppings.  I never get them. They are a ripoff.  You open up a can of mushrooms and jack up the price 1.50 or 2.00?  And if you chop some onions on there, I pay AGAIN!?  And now my lousy pizza is closer to 20 bucks.  Is it ME?

  1. Hey, I think you’re seeing the result of these higher food prices. I mean, base food like corn and wheat. The bagels we buy every sunday for the last decade have just increased from $3.75 to $4.75 for a bag of 7 bagels. I had not seen a price increase like that for a LONG time and like you was somewhat surprised and shocked. I was thinking - usually these increases are incremental. Why not start with a $0.50 increase per half dozen? A whole buck? That’s near to a 30% increase. Anyway, I’m not surprised by your story. I was wondering if you knew if your pizza guy had just jacked the price or it was always that way but you were unaware?

  2. Yesterday I went to my old favorite place–the 2 dollar slice place and they are 3 dollars a slice. A 50% increase. I asked the woman, “…then how much is a large cheese pie?”, and she had to stop and actually work it out in her head as “16 dollars”.

This has cured me of my pizza habit. No more. No way. I don’t care about wheat futures. I will not pay 3 dollars a slice and yes, it is because of how they went about it. Could you have it at 2.50 for a while before going on to 3? And when these prices come back down, will the slice price? Doubt it.
